how to fit a wire on garage up and over door?

It appears that you asking how to install a garage door opener. If this is the case, then you need to purchase a opener of at least 1/2 HP. Go to your local home center and select the opener that meets your needs, you can get one with 1 or 2 remote openers (the operator device for your vehicle). If you follow the instructions carefully, you can do it in about 2 hours (longer if you you are not mechanical). You will need an electrical source near the opener motor on the ceiling. Things to remember: do not pierce the wiring when installing, make sure all screws are tight, read the instructions twice before attempting. If you are not sure, do not attempt this task. Have it installed.

The question is somewhat vague, what do you intend to do with this wire?
Timothy L | Apr 28, 2010
I think you are asking how to fit a replacement wire that goes from the door slider to the big spring at the top ? If so I really wouldn't try a DIY job. Its is in fact quite a dangerous job. Quite easy to remove fingers or get in the way of the cable whipping if not located properly. Get a quote from a garage door company.
GT | Apr 28, 2010
You need to be more specific before any body can assist you, after all electric line can be rather dangerous on many aspects safety is more important not only to you but your next door na bours as well.
pipe strangler | Apr 28, 2010
I think Timothy has the correct line here, its an operating wire attached to door to enable it to open with spring assistance however as there are several different manufacturers using cables and springs in differtent ways its not really possible to give a sensible helpful answer without the make/model of of the door.

My elect garage door has a 3Kw motor. Opening and closing takes 20sec 10 times a day. What is the cost per yr?

This would be a HUGE motor for a door opener. most are .5 hp to 1.5 hp (400-1200 watt) 200 sec/day x 365=73000/60=1217/60=.277 total hours x 3kw=60.83 kw/hr x (price electricity in kw/hr)=yearly cost

daniel g | Jul 20, 2009
themanofknoledge? | Jul 20, 2009
i depends on your electric cost you'll have to check your bill. aka i don't know not enough information
The Circus Bearded Lady | Jul 20, 2009
5 acres of tree needs to be planted every year.
Donkey | Jul 20, 2009
Your door runs for 20.27 hours per year. Assuming it runs at full 3KW and electric is 20p per KWh (Killo Watt Hour) £12.16 The device will use power all of the time it is in standby (just like your TV does) so say it uses 20 watt / hour in standby. that gives 174kwh. £34.96 total £47.12 Of course the motor probably pulls less than 3 kw so you might likely use less than half of this ammount.

Cooperation in Wireless Networks: Principles and Applications, Real Egoistic Behavior is to Cooperate!

Creator: Frank H. P. Fitzek, Marcos D. Katz | 2006-07-21

Frank H. P. Fitzek, Marcos D. Katz. available wireless information networks and resources just ... could learn to open the garage door for you wirelessly. Thus, you would not need to fish for the garage door opener, yet another wireless gadget.

Publisher: Springer

About this book
Cooperation is known as an effective strategy in nature to achieve individual or common goals by forming cooperative groups. As the cross over between nature and engineering has always been fruitful, Cooperation in Wireless Networks: Principles and Applications advocates the use of cooperative strategies in the field of wireless communications. Whether to cooperate or act autonomously, i.e., in a more selfish manner, has to be decided by each wireless terminal individually. Following the rule "The real egoistic behavior is to cooperate", mutual aid among terminals will be applied if and only if it is beneficial for all group members. Cooperation in Wireless Networks: Principles and Applications covers the underlying principles of cooperative techniques as well as several applications demonstrating the use of such techniques in practical systems. The work is written in a collaborative manner by several authors from Asia, America, and Europe. Twenty chapters introduce and discuss in detail the main cooperative strategies for the whole communication protocol stack from the application layer down to the physical layer. Furthermore power saving strategies, security, hardware realization, and user scenarios for cooperative communication systems are introduced and discussed. The book also summarizes the strength of cooperation for upcoming generation of wireless communication systems, clearly motivating the use of cooperative techniques and pointing out that cooperation will become one of the key technologies enabling 4G and beyond. This book puts into one volume a comprehensive and technically rich view of the wireless communications scene from a cooperation point of view.

Screw-drive garage door openers have a number of advantages over chain-drive models.

Publisher: Hearst

About this book
The garage is often the last place in the home that gets a makeover?even though it's often desperately in need of an overhaul. But homeowners are catching on. Now, Rick Peters presents six themed ways to transform the garage into a comfortable, effective, and efficient space: enclosing a carport; making a mechanic's dream work area; adding a woodworking shop; creating a craft room; putting in storage (and more storage); and building a family room. All the work takes place on site, in real families' two-car garages, with the tasks divided into two groups: those that the average homeowner can accomplish him or herself, and those best left to professionals. The guide's friendly and easy-to-follow format shows what needs to be done and how to do it; the more demanding jobs receive extremely detailed descriptions that explain what the work entails, how long it should take, and what it typically costs.

About this book
Offering a uniquely modern, balanced approach, Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig's DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS, Third Edition, integrates the best of traditional drill and practice with the best elements of the reform movement. To many developmental math students, algebra is like a foreign language. They have difficulty translating the words, their meanings, and how they apply to problem solving. Emphasizing the "language of algebra," the text's fully integrated learning process is designed to expand students' reasoning abilities and teach them how to read, write, and think mathematically. It blends instructional approaches that include vocabulary, practice, and well-defined pedagogy with an emphasis on reasoning, modeling, communication, and technology skills.

The three Liftmaster 371 LM 315 HZ Garage Door Openers that I purchased worked as advertized. No problems with functionality. My problem is that I ordered three at one time and was charged the full shipping and handling charges for each one individually. They were shipped together in one box as one would expect. So the actual price including the shipping and handling was much higher than what I expected. I feel I was ripped off, although somewhat subtly. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 2, 2012

    Great Product; Relatively Easy Installation

I benefited greatly from comments others made about this product and how to install it, and I thought I'd add mine for any who are looking at getting this. My 11-year-old Liftmaster chain drive garage door opener stopped working and had the same worn out sprocket that so many have described, with the white snow shavings, etc. I too feared I'd have to spend $100s getting it fixed, then I found this great product on Amazon. Works like a charm, but what a lot of work it is.......

First, I wanted to offer compliments to other reviewers that described the symptoms of the gears being bad - the "snow", the stop-and-starts, the stop working altogether but can still hear the motor running - nailed it exactly. The directions that come with it are excellent - step-by-step, and it explains exactly what you need to do. The directions are the best part of this product - if they were not so well done, it would be impossible. No knock against the product, but installation was considerably more work than I expected. I had visions of undoing a couple of screws, popping out a gear, putting in the new ones, and being done - boy, I couldn't have been more wrong. Worked! Here are a few tips.

This is one of those time consuming jobs with little annoying issues. Here are my tips so hopefully you can avoid the problems I had, making your job much faster than mine was. The sprocket on the top of my unit broke so I just had to replace the drive gear and shaft. No other parts were worn or damaged so I didn't bother with them. The annoying part is that you unscrew the screws on the shaft plate from the inside of the unit and there isn't alot of room for your hand motion. I used the smallest ratchet in my set. A couple things to be aware of during this step is that you can remove the back panel with the circuit board by unplugging the circuit board. It has a multi-pin plug that is very similar to computer drive plugs. Also, I recommend wearing mechanics gloves b/c the unit is made from stamped metal so there are lots of sharp edges and corners which easily cut up your knucles and scrape fingers. One other problem I had was with my chain. Since the sprocket broke the... 4/5 BTM (Jeffersonville, IN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) To verify this remote works with your unit, press the learn button on your overhead unit (remove the plastic light cover on the back side and look for a square button - mine is red). When you press the button the led light will light up. If yours is yellow, then this remote will work for you. I would suggest you immediately unplug and re-plug in your garage door opener to cancel the "learn" mode so that on the off chance that a neighbor is opening their garage door your door opener won't "learn" their code and start opening when they push their remote... but anyway...Setup is as simple as that, press the learn button, then press the remote button. The unit will click and flash to let you know it is learned. Now the remote will work. The remote also comes with battery and clip to mount to your car visor. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 17, 2010

With this kit and a little time, you can repair your garage door opener.

I was faced with the decision to purchase a new garage door opener for about $230 or repair the existing opener from 1992 which lacks some of today's safety features. Since I don't use this garage door often and I don't have children, I opted to save some cash and do the repair myself. I have no previous experience of doing these types of garage door opener repairs, but as a do-it-yourselfer I figured it was worth the attempt. The kit came with detailed instructions which broke the process down into 5 main steps each with multiple individual tasks. The instructions were not exact for my opener, but were close enough to get the point. The steps start with removing the motor with the worm, removing the chain stem with the gear, replacing the worm, replacing the gear, and finally reassembling everything. Once the first two steps were completed I brought the parts inside to work on. I had the most trouble removing the tightly set pin to replace the gear. About two hours... 5/5 L. T. Not for the faint of heart....

This was a lot of work, more than I had anticipated, despite the excellent reviews here, warning of the many nuts, plugs, and pins involved. The directions were so-so. I found that they were written very generically with the intent to apply to variations of the models. The diagrams could have been more clear...for example, I had trouble figuring out where the retainer clip and limit drive gear (2A) was. It's the white thing on the end of the sprocket assembly shaft. My advice is to take your time and move very slowly through the instructions, step by step. There were a few things that delayed me:* The sprocket assembly had to be lifted up through the hole in the chassis, and I only had 2 inches of clearance between the top of the opener and the ceiling of the garage. This meant that the opener had to come down a few inches. I suspended it with rope and bungees since taking it down completely would have meant un-bolting it from the chain axel, and I didn't... 5/5 Spumanti (Mountain View, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817 (Misc.) It comes with detailed instructions on how to program, but I had a little difficulty that I may be able to spare you from. The learn button that you will need to push on the opener is next to the light bulbs, not under the cover with the motor and circuit boards. I was initially unable to get the opener to learn the code being broadcast from this remote. Turns out that I had to reset the opener so that none of my remotes were recognized, then program them all again at the same time. It works great, and I know from previous use with Genie's remotes that the battery will last 6 or more years with daily use. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 13, 2011

Loved it. Then it died. [Updated]

This replaced an old chain-drive model that clanked away for ten years. Installed the unit myself without much difficulty. It took me a long time but the instructions were well organized. Upon firing the new unit up, two features stood out: (1) it is QUIET; (2) it is slow. From my point of view the unit is (was) so quiet that I didn't mind the slow speed. Incredibly quiet and smooth. I even told my co-workers how great it was. Five stars . . .Then, after about 14 months, it died. No signs of distress. It. Just. Stopped.A Genie tech ultimately determines the problem is [probably] the circuit board. Also, the circuit board is only covered for 12 months so it'll be $100 for a new one. That should fix the problem, unless it doesn't. Then I can buy more parts.[UPDATED FROM ONE STAR TO THREE] After proving to Genie that I had actually purchased the the opener, they sent me a new circuit board for free. Install issues but working well now

0 4/5 CSL (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews The manual is pretty good and they pack things so that they are easy to find and follow but for my tall door which required an extension kit they missed some crucial info. The belt bullet/joiner needs to be on the right side when inside the garage and facing door. If you make this mistake you could have some bad results--broken pully. The instructions are also weak around the top section brace. Now that it's installed and working well I do like it and the quietness and overall ease of use 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 16, 2011

Quiet as a mouse, but an incidious power theif

With TVs drawing less than a watt or two on standby, and the ENERGY STAR program to highlight and reward purchasers of efficient appliances, and with electric power companies subsudising CFL bulbs, to reduce our national electrical power demand, you might think any household appliance you buy today was designed with energy efficiency in mind. If you (like me) believe that, you would be wrong! This Genie garage door opener system draws a whopping 8 watts of standby power, every hour it is plugged in, whether it is doing anything or not. That's 70 Killowatt-hours a year for doing nothing. If you have two or three doors on your garage, do the math. For reference, that is twice the power that my 1995-ish Genie screw drive opener consumed on standby.I happened to discover this when I put the lamp covers on the powerhead one afternoon when the opener had been setting all day without being used. The temperature of the chassis was uncomfortably warm. easy install, works great

My Genie garage door opener (potentially 15yrs old since I bought the home used) started making a horrible racket and wouldn't open or close, but didn't make any noise when I disconnected the carriage release from the screw drive. That pointed to a bad carriage. I was very happy to find this part on Amazon.Installation was very easy:1) pull the manual release cord on the carriage to disconnect it from the screw drive2) remove the cotter pin/bolt from the old carriage and the angle bar that is attached to the garage door (leave the bar attached to the door)3) remove single nut supporting the track at the front of the garage.4) supporting the track with 1 hand, gently push the track off to one side just a couple of inches to allow you to slide off the existing carriageNOTE: after you pull off the carriage, you'll probably notice that some/many/all of the teeth have broken off5) slide the new carriage on being careful about the orientation... 5/5 Qikstart (Chandler, AZ) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Craftsman 1/2 HP Opener 1995

Our Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener ('95 model) acted up whenever it got cold and had been progressively getting worst. After researching the problem (spring tension, up/down force setting, alignment of sensors) it was finally determined that the sensors themselves had become defective. This is due to the cold weather affecting the capacitor in the sensor. Each sensor has a capacitor on its printed circuit board. Each circuit board has two electrolytic capacitors. One is 470uf at 16 volts. The other is 1uf at 50 volts. The cold increases conductivity and reduces the resistance of the insulation material in the capacitor. Age of the insulation material also degrades. This in turn impacts the completion of the circuit being created by the electronic sensor eyes at the garage door opener itself. (yes, too much info here but I wracked my brains out trying to figure out the WHY instead of just replacing the sensors)The replacement sensors are a perfect fit... 5/5 R.L. It fixed my problem!

My receiving eye LED light was very dim and would go completely off when it got really cold down here in S. Florida, Broward Co. 12/27/10 (36 degrees!)So what would happen is when I would go to press the wall button to have the garage door go down, it would go down for like 7" then automatically go back up on it's own - and the light would blink 10 times. So I bought the two replacements, (comes in a kit, with both) that were exact to the original model numbers...1) I only replaced the receiving eye and the LED light wasn't as bright as the sending eye - and I still had the same problem.2) I then replaced the sending eye and adjusted them so they can "see" each other, Everything Works Perfect NOW!!!For me at least - adjusting them was a little tricky, because they are very touchy and must be aligned perfectly.Just make sure the receiving eye LED light is not fluttering or blinking really fast, because it won't work... 5/5 ProFlex (Firenze, Italia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
