About this book
Illustrating how a fire alarm detects smoke and what the “plasma” is in a plasma screen television, this fascinating handbook explains how everyday household devices function and operate. More than 180 different household technologies are covered, including gadgets unique to apartment buildings and houseboats. Devices are grouped according to their "habitats"—the living room, family room, den, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and basement—and feature a detailed description of what the device does and how it works, as well as a photograph for easy identification. With helpful sidebars describing related technical issues, such as why a cheap dimmer switch can interfere with radio reception, this handbook for curious readers provides carefully detailed descriptions and the history behind many of the older household technologies like toasters and faucets to newer technologies like motion detectors, TiVo, and satellite radio.

About this book
With more than 160 entries detailing everything from the junk buried in desk drawers to that mysterious box blinking away in the coat closet, this practical guide navigates through modern office technology. Each entry includes a functional description of a device (what it is and how it works) as well as particulars on who invented it and how its design has evolved over the years. Devices are grouped according to their habitats—in the conference room, hanging from the ceiling, or connected to a computer—to assist in quick and easy identification. Solving office mysteries, such as why telephone keypads have their ones in the upper left corner while calculator keypads place the ones in the lower left corner, this fascinating resource decodes the often confusing technological landscapes of everyday offices.

0 5/5 Steve (Honolulu, HI) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Liftmaster 377LM 315MHz Garage Door Keypad We used to have the key switch on the side of our garage. We recently had an alarm system installed and one of the first things the installer did was tell us to remove it. When I asked why he showed me how easy it was to just pry the switch off of the garage and short the two wires together to open the door. I'd never thought about it. He recommended we install the wireless unit here. Amazon had a good price so I ordered it. Had it installed in about two minutes. "Training" it to our garage door opener was so easy I thought I'd missed something until it worked. The security issue is enough to make this worthwhile but boy is it convenient now when we want to open the garage and don't have keys because they're in the house. Well worth the money in my book. Handy as a pocket on a shirt, just what I was looking for

This is a great way to add a wireless entry to your garage. I wish I had bought this 12 years ago when I moved into my house. I use it every time I do yard work. There are two separate parts to this keyless entry. One part is a signal receptor. It plugs into a standard electrical outlet inside your garage. This part makes a wired connection directly to your garage door opener or to the the push button switch that opens and closes your garage door. It should work with any opener that uses a two wire doorbell type switch. If you have a four wire switch, do some homework before you buy this. If you can find two of the wires that you can jump across and open the door, then this product should work for you. The signal receptor also has a short antenna wire that receives the wireless signal from the numeric keypad you install outside of your garage. The other part is the numeric keypad. You simply screw it in place outside your garage somewhere. No... 5/5 TTP3317 "Go Sooners" (Arlington, TX) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 5/5 idget "mellowde" (West Texas) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: 18KR - Wireless Entry for Garage Doors (Electronics) Great product. Easy to install and solved the constant problem of not being able to open the garage door from outside. No need to have the remote opener with you when you have one of these. Secure code prevents unwanted entry. No wires to run outside at all. Had to run the cable supplied between the opener and the plug in receiver (plugs into a duplex receptical). I doubt that you'll find one easier to install. The cable that comes with it is about 50 feet long and has a plug end made to fit into the receiver module. I've used it over and over without any problem or failure at all. Highly recommended. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 14, 2009

Tips for Purchasers - especially for Genie Openers

My old Genie keypad mounted outside my home stopped lighting up so it was difficult to use at night. This Chamberlain Liftmaster replacement works but there are several quirks to installing it to operate a Genie Intellitouch Garage Door Opener. Unfortunatley the Genie keypads are no longer manufactured and if you find a used one it will be quite expensive.1. You must have the door closed and be inside the garage (so you can get up on a ladder and open up the front compartment pf the opener, containing the light bulbs) in order to set up the Chamberlain keypad.2. The Genie Opener "learn" button is an unlabeled push button to the left of the left lightbulb in the front compartment of the Genie Opener (on mine there are two Phillips head screws (one on each side of the white front compartment) holding the front compartment.3. In the instructions that come with the Chamberlain keypad there are two choices, 5, and 6 for two different groups of Genie openers - mine... 4/5 Roswell Owner (Roswell, GA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) worked perfectly with a Chamberlain 2280

Have a Chamberlain LiftMaster Professional model 2280 with "Security+" (just marketing talk for the rolling changing code that all openers have had for 10+ yrs), and an orange learn button (we'll come back to this) on the back of the unit under the rear translucent light bulb cover. The opener manual specifies a 976LM keypad for this unit. This keypad has a 9v battery, lights up, allows an additional temporary code to be set by # of openings or # of hours, and is grayish-cream in color. Two screws to mount the unit, with one mounting hole on the top outside of the keypad and the other behind the battery cover at bottom. Contrary to comments elsewhere: 1) you do not have to hold the buttons down longer to get them to "take" ... I just punch 'em in like any other keypad I've had over the years; 2) it does not take time to reset if you mistype ... it just takes the last 4 digits you entered before pressing Send and reacts immediately if you enter a new set. Nice because you don't... 5/5 Ken in Denver (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Liftmaster 976LM/977LM 390Mhz Wireless Keyless Entry Pad Have a Chamberlain LiftMaster Professional model 2280 with "Security+" (just marketing talk for the rolling changing code that all openers have had for 10+ yrs), and an orange learn button (we'll come back to this) on the back of the unit under the rear translucent light bulb cover. Excellent replacement

0 5/5 Snowdog (Andover, NJ United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Liftmaster 976LM/977LM 390Mhz Wireless Keyless Entry Pad I bought this as an exact replacement for the original remote. After 9 years, the original remote was working sporadically at best. I would often need to enter the code several times before it worked, and felt the need to push the buttons extra hard as some other reviewers have mentioned (replacing the battery did not help.) The new remote solved all my problems and works perfectly, was well worth the $24. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 30, 2008

    Great

0 4/5 SkolVikes (Twin Cities, MN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This product does exactly what it is supposed to do. Installation is as simple as putting in 2 screws. Programming it takes about 30 seconds. 2 minor complaints I have 1. is that you have to enter the code to get it to close as well as open. 2. It would be nice to be able to assign a temporary code to give a service person or neighbor access while you are on vacation - not a big deal especially considering the great price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 27, 2006
