The Presumption of Guilt, The Arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Race, Class and Crime in America

Creator: Charles Ogletree | 2010-06-22

About this book
Shortly after noon on Tuesday, July 16, 2009, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., MacArthur Fellow and Harvard professor, was mistakenly arrested by Cambridge police sergeant James Crowley for attempting to break into his own home. The ensuing media firestorm ignited debate across the country. The Crowley-Gates incident was a clash of absolutes, underscoring the tension between black and white, police and civilians, and the privileged and less privileged in modern America. Charles Ogletree, one of the country’s foremost experts on civil rights, uses this incident as a lens through which to explore issues of race, class, and crime, with the goal of creating a more just legal system for all. Working from years of research and based on his own classes and experiences with law enforcement, the author illuminates the steps needed to embark on the long journey toward racial and legal equality for all Americans.

About this book
As can only happen in New York, two strangers find themselves railroaded into an anger-management class, where they soon become fast friends. Iris is there because of an eminently justifiable meltdown on a crowded flight, whereas Ken got caught defacing library books with rude (but true!) messages about his former boyfriend. The boyfriend that he caught in bed with another man.Needless to say, Iris and Ken were cosmically destined to be friends. What follows is a strikingly original comedy as Ken enlists Iris to infiltrate his ex-boyfriend’s life in the hope of discovering that he’s miserable. And Iris reciprocates, dispatching Ken to work himself into the confidence of her own boyfriend, whom she suspects of cheating. But what if Ken’s ex isn’t crying himself to sleep? What if he’s not the amoral fiend Ken wants to believe he is? And what should Iris do when her worst suspicions start to come true? Exactly how perfect do we have the right to expect our fellow human beings to be?Anger, betrayal, loyalty, and friendship—Design Flaws of the Human Condition explores these universal themes with wisdom, compassion, and a wickedly irreverent sense of humor.

Tip for those who complain of short range

0 5/5 EPS (West Columbia, SC) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Chamberlain KLIK1U Clicker Transmitter Universal Garage Door Remote Control (Tools & Home Improvement) I got mine set up fairly quickly. Didn't work the first time, so I reversed all the switches on the opener and did it again, and that did the trick. But I then found the range to be very short - less than 10 feet - no good! But what I also found was that I was expecting to press the button 16 times for a Stanley opener, yet 14 did the trick (i.e. the door was activated on the 14th press.) 14 is for a multicode (I take that to mean generic.) So I programmed it again, but this time did the full 16 presses, and now my range is very good - along the lines of 100 feet. Also, if you're curious (I was) - how does it control 2 doors with only 1 set of DIP switches? It remembers the settings during activation. So you set it to match one door, do the programming step, then set it to match the switches on your second door and do the programming step for it. Great unit and highly recommend! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 22, 2010

    Wow! Am I happy!

My Genie opener was installed in 1990, and I had dropped the remote for what turned out to be the last time. I had searched and found out that model remote was no longer made. I took a chance and ordered the Clicker. When the Clicker arrived, I found the reference to my unit. I knew about the DIP switches inside my existing remote, and the Clicker instructions told me to program the DIP switches inside the Clicker just the same. (This is only true for specific models of openers, remotes and year installed - others use the programming button on the receiver). I followed the clear directions: they seemed a bit odd, but I followed them exactly (17 clicks) and voila! ~ the garage door opened! I programmed the other door as well, and now I have one compact remote to open both doors. I cannot believe it took me so long to find the solution, and it took less than five minutes to program the two doors. Wow! Am I happy! The instructions are clear and detailed, and you just need to... 5/5 KBSt "KBSt" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Chamberlain KLIK1U Clicker Transmitter Universal Garage Door Remote Control (Tools & Home Improvement) My Genie opener was installed in 1990, and I had dropped the remote for what turned out to be the last time. 0 5/5 Old-Red-Head (Fountain Valley, CA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Chamberlain 940EV Garage Keyless Entry (Tools & Home Improvement) Chamberlain 940EV Garage Keyless Entry Remote was great. USE the short instructions on the unit itself, NOT the enclosed instructions. Doing the LEARN procedures on the provided sheet did not work properly, causing my car/handheld remotes to lose their connection. It was easy to reprogram, but would not have been necessary if the Garage Keyless Entry remote instructions were correct, namely you may need to press the ENTER key several times until the light blinks on the motor unit, then press "0" (zero) to complete programming. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 9, 2013

Worked great, but double check your settings for older openers!

0 5/5 Anonymous - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Chamberlain 940EV Garage Keyless Entry (Tools & Home Improvement) Works exactly as expected (had these at our previous house). I had read in a review of a similar product that the "Enter" button would open or close the garage door with or without the code being entered. After I installed, I double checked for this problem, and even after the 15-second wait time for the lights to stop flashing on the keypad, the "Enter" key opened or closed the door. I waited five minutes and checked with the same result. My opener is from 2005, so I turned off the one-button closing option (hold 1 and 9 keys for 10 seconds until it flashes 4 times), and this fixed the problem. Be sure to check this if you have an older opener. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 23, 2012

best thing since sliced bread (well, almost;))!!!

I was very disappointed to discover that my brand-new 2011 model year vehicle did not come with any kind of garage door opener/homelink option. In looking for a garage door remote, I had purchased another Chamberlain remote that worked well but I didn't like the idea of keeping a remote "loose" in my car (too easy for thieves to break in steal it while getting my address from my insurance and/or registration cards). I liked the idea of a keychain remote but it seemed like none of them were capable of controlling more than one kind of a garage door at a time. I called Chamberlain to ask them if they had any keychain remotes that could control more than one type of garage door and they recommended the 956EV. Boy, am I glad they did - this thing is great!!!!It's a tiny remote (almost identical in size to my key fob but lighter) and it can control 3 different doors. Easy Setup, Good Range, Works Great

We normally use our garage door as our main entrance, and we were looking for a smaller alternative to our remotes. This 956EV remote is not as small as I thought it would be but is close enough to fit in your pocket. It has three different buttons that you can set them for three different doors, like office and residential, or you can just set all keys for the same door. If you have been in the market for one of these remotes, you already know that there are compatibility issues regarding which frequencies to choose. Fortunately, this particular 956EV model is new and universal. It means it should operate on both 315 MHz and 390 MHz units, and you have one less thing to worry about. The whole setup is easy, and it takes only 10 minutes or less. Works well

I have had it about 3 months. I tried programming it without reading and thought it didn't work until I read the instructions. Ha ha. There's a little button you must push with a paper clip, well, read and really follow the instructions. I bought it for a new Chamberlain opener, used to have a Craftsman, and on reflection the extra steps in programming are worth it so it doesn't accidentally lose the setting. Twice my Craftsman banging around in my pocket or purse caused the remote to lose its code. This one never will. I wish these folks would make a one-button remote as tiny as possible--all we want is small and 1 opener. Who the heck has 3 garages and why do their needs matter more than mine. Even families with double doors stick the same car in the same bay all the time. But this is as small as it gets, it has great range--I can open the door from the mailbox and I couldn't with my other remote. I docked it a star because I'm reserving 5 stars for the 1-button remote... 4/5 Toolmaker (Boston MA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) So the actual price including the shipping and handling was much higher than what I expected. A Great Pocket-Sized 300MHz Remote!

This winter the cold weather in Minnesota killed the batteries in my existing box-remotes. I needed something that I could bring indoors in my pocket while leaving the car parked outdoors for an extended period of time. I purchased two units from A Click Away Remotes, and I'm happy to say that they both work after properly configuring the dip-switches.Initially, I thought I had one DOA remote (either the battery was dead, or the unit failed) and another remote didn't work after setting the dip-switches to what I thought was the proper position. I figured out that I had the switches flipped in the opposite direction (down needed to be up and up needed to be down - reverse to what my box-remote dip-switches were). Yeah, now one worked! After taking a closer look at the second 'DOA' remote I found that a plastic protection tab was placed between the battery and the metal spring clip attached to the circuit board. Once I removed the tab the remote worked just fine... 5/5 S. McFarland (Saint Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews, January 13, 2010

Then you will be able to set the 10 switches to your unique code and then unplug the plastic battery safety slip to enable the battery. Works Great

0 5/5 Will N. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ford Three Button Keyless Remote Works just fine. Took less than a minute to program and worked right away. You can also program multiple remotes at once so this is a great buy even if you already have a remote but want a spare or if the part that attaches to the key ring broke off the remote that came with your vehicle like mine did. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 1, 2011
