In a Narrow Grave, Essays on Texas

Creator: Larry McMurtry | 2001-07-03

First published in 1968, In a Narrow Grave is the classic statement of what it means to come from Texas. In these essays, McMurtry opens a window into the past and present of America's largest state.

Publisher: Simon & Schuster

About this book
Writing with characteristic grace and wit, Larry McMurtry tackles the full spectrum of his favorite themes -- from sex, literature, and cowboys to rodeos, small-town folk, and big-city slickers. First published in 1968, In a Narrow Grave is the classic statement of what it means to come from Texas. In these essays, McMurtry opens a window into the past and present of America's largest state. In his own words: "Before I was out of high school, I realized I was witnessing the dying of a way of life -- the rural, pastoral way of life. In the Southwest the best energies were no longer to be found on the homeplace, or in the small towns; the cities required these energies and the cities bought them...." "I recognized, too, that the no-longer-open but still spacious range on which my ranching family had made its livelihood...would not produce a livelihood for me or for my siblings and their kind....The myth of the cowboy grew purer every year because there were so few actual cowboys left to contradict it...." "I had actually been living in cities for fourteen years when I pulled together these essays; intellectually I had been a city boy, but imaginatively, I was still trudging up the dusty path that led out of the country...."

Details Below) The three Liftmaster 371 LM 315 HZ Garage Door Openers that I purchased worked as advertized. No problems with functionality. My problem is that I ordered three at one time and was charged the full shipping and handling charges for each one individually. They were shipped together in one box as one would expect. So the actual price including the shipping and handling was much higher than what I expected. I feel I was ripped off, although somewhat subtly. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 2, 2012

0 5/5 amru - See all my reviews Bought this for the car parked outside. Programming was piece of cake, just read the directions in the pamphlet or on the garage opening motor [which I did].3 steps1. Press and HOLD the open button on the remote2. Press and RELEASE the purple button [I forgot what they called it]3. Release the remote button ONCE the garage openers' LIGHT comes on.Make sure you reprogram the old remotes at the same time so they all work on the same code, frequency, or what-not.Excellent seller as well, brought it from "ASPDOORS & A WHOLE LOT MORE"Hope this helped.pce! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 24, 2008

0 1/5 Tamshen - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Liftmaster 371LM 315MHz Garage Door Remote(See Tech. Details Below) I emailed and asked to confirm proper garage door openner. I purchase two that ended up being the wrong ones, they said that the color of the button on the unit mattered. I thought the serial # and other numbers would get me the correct unit only to find they want me to order again and pay in advance then refund my new remotes if they get them back in original condition with a 25% restocking fee. I would not use this company again until they make this right. I don't recommend them, find a company that offers a better return policy and faster response.Good luck.I went to HOME DEPOT and gladly spent $35 without the hassle and it worked fine. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 8, 2012

Small size, though works well with good range

The remote is 2.5" (L) x 1.5" (W) x 3/8" (T) [edited thanks to comments for correction]. The range is about 40' line of sight. Our predicament was finding one, pocket-size, remote that could operate 2 different garage door openers. Carrying 2 of the standard sized, inbox, remotes was too bulky for our needs. We have two different Liftmaster garage door openers. One was a new Craftsman+ and the other an older (6 years old) Craftsman Formula 1 garage door opener. These openers both have rolling codes, though work on different frequencies (one with a purple learning button and the other with a blue one), so each of their standard remotes, and seemingly a number of after-market, ones won't learn both simultaneously. After unsuccessfully trying a few remotes from local hardware stores, we risked this one. It was pricier than others, though had the appeal that this one actually works, Indeed, it works great.Hope this helps, Mike... 5/5 M. Burrows (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews, November 6, 2012

    Pocket Garage Opener LiftMaster 890MAX

I was looking for the a second garage door opener to use in another car or bicycle.890MAX is really the smallest one I could find for my LiftMaster. You might want to consider quick release system to your keychainThe remote is easy to program one hint is if you want to hit the purple programming button and the car is right below it instead of moving your car out and putting a leader or a chair you might be able to open a car door closest to the garage unit and reach the programming button standing in the car doorway. The remote is easy to operate and I like the red LED light. The plastic of the remote feels a bit cheap and buttons are easy to press.Another hint if you... 5/5 Igo - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Tip for those who complain of short range

0 5/5 EPS (West Columbia, SC) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Chamberlain KLIK1U Clicker Transmitter Universal Garage Door Remote Control (Tools & Home Improvement) I got mine set up fairly quickly. Didn't work the first time, so I reversed all the switches on the opener and did it again, and that did the trick. But I then found the range to be very short - less than 10 feet - no good! But what I also found was that I was expecting to press the button 16 times for a Stanley opener, yet 14 did the trick (i.e. the door was activated on the 14th press.) 14 is for a multicode (I take that to mean generic.) So I programmed it again, but this time did the full 16 presses, and now my range is very good - along the lines of 100 feet. Also, if you're curious (I was) - how does it control 2 doors with only 1 set of DIP switches? It remembers the settings during activation. So you set it to match one door, do the programming step, then set it to match the switches on your second door and do the programming step for it. Great unit and highly recommend! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 22, 2010

    Wow! Am I happy!

My Genie opener was installed in 1990, and I had dropped the remote for what turned out to be the last time. I had searched and found out that model remote was no longer made. I took a chance and ordered the Clicker. When the Clicker arrived, I found the reference to my unit. I knew about the DIP switches inside my existing remote, and the Clicker instructions told me to program the DIP switches inside the Clicker just the same. (This is only true for specific models of openers, remotes and year installed - others use the programming button on the receiver). I followed the clear directions: they seemed a bit odd, but I followed them exactly (17 clicks) and voila! ~ the garage door opened! I programmed the other door as well, and now I have one compact remote to open both doors. I cannot believe it took me so long to find the solution, and it took less than five minutes to program the two doors. Wow! Am I happy! Once you program the keypad to your garage door opener, it's ready to attach (2 screws). It took me a couple tries to complete the programming, due to the fact I was not fully depressing the numbers on the keypad when programming the code. This review is from: Liftmaster 377LM 315MHz Garage Door Keypad We used to have the key switch on the side of our garage. We recently had an alarm system installed and one of the first things the installer did was tell us to remove it. When I asked why he showed me how easy it was to just pry the switch off of the garage and short the two wires together to open the door. I'd never thought about it. He recommended we install the wireless unit here. Amazon had a good price so I ordered it. Had it installed in about two minutes. "Training" it to our garage door opener was so easy I thought I'd missed something until it worked. The security issue is enough to make this worthwhile but boy is it convenient now when we want to open the garage and don't have keys because they're in the house. Well worth the money in my book. Tips for Purchasers - especially for Genie Openers

My old Genie keypad mounted outside my home stopped lighting up so it was difficult to use at night. This Chamberlain Liftmaster replacement works but there are several quirks to installing it to operate a Genie Intellitouch Garage Door Opener. Unfortunatley the Genie keypads are no longer manufactured and if you find a used one it will be quite expensive.1. Works with Craftsman 1/2 HP opener

I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP opener with a manufactured date of 8/2000, and the orange smart learning button. The instructions for this Liftmaster keypad suggest that my opener is type 4 with an opener ID of 2 for programming purposes. When done this way, either the keypad will work with the opener, OR my original remotes will work with the opener, but not both. Clearly that would be unacceptable, so I tried different numbers for the opener ID, and everything worked perfectly after programming the keypad using an opener ID of 4. Perhaps it is a mistake in the instructions, or perhaps there was a running change in my opener model, who knows. The point is, if it doesn't work when programmed with the opener ID specified in the instructions, try the other ID numbers before giving up.Other than the programming issue, it works fine. I have a newer door with full steel facing front and back, about 1.5" thick overall (IIRC the R value is something like 12.6). 0 5/5 golden_ "golden_" (Colorado) - See all my reviews This review is from: Liftmaster Clicker Universal Wireless Keyless Entry Keypad 387LM (Electronics) This device makes a great gift. For about a year now, it has worked flawlessly with our 1994 model Sears Craftsman garage door opener. The directions were good and programming was easy. I was initially concerned about two things: the lettering wearing off the keys we use, and dropping keystrokes which would cause us to have to reenter the code. Neither has been a problem. Although we use it daily, the lettering on the keys has not shown any wear yet. The keypad is good and every keystroke is reliable. I like the backlight feature - easier to see in the dark. The backlight comes on with your first keystroke and turns off automatically. The one slight complaint I have is that the lid doesn't like to stay up by itself, after several months of use. This requires slightly more coordination for one-handed operation. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 11, 2010

No need for the expensive precisiondoor service! Do it yourself!

I was renting a beach house when I inadvertently left the precisiondoor.net garage door opener in my swim trunks. Of course the unit no longer worked. I decided to do some research after contacting precisiondoor.net to see cost of replacement. $55 for the remote $50 for service tech to install. I was shocked. Did some more research and found precisiondoor uses marantex products rebranded to precision door! So I bought this and got it shipped overnight and installed in less than 2 minutes! I just activated the main garage door ceiling unit to "find" remotes by pressin the "P" button 3 times. Once it was in program "find" mode, I just held the larger marantec remote button down until there was a solid light. Then press the "P" button on the main garage door ceiling unit two more times and VIOLA! Worked good as new and spent less than $30 vs $105! The range was also great.
