    Great Product; Relatively Easy Installation

I benefited greatly from comments others made about this product and how to install it, and I thought I'd add mine for any who are looking at getting this. My 11-year-old Liftmaster chain drive garage door opener stopped working and had the same worn out sprocket that so many have described, with the white snow shavings, etc. I too feared I'd have to spend $100s getting it fixed, then I found this great product on Amazon. I installed it last night, the whole process, including finding tools and adjusting the chain and door afterward, took me about 2.5 hours, but the actual removal and installation of the part took only about an hour. Garage door works great now, and is quieter than before. For the installation, I did what the reviewer before me did, which means I didn't remove all of the stuff the instructions said to remove. Here's a fairly detailed step-by-step of what I did -- my inner and outer "trolleys" (the things that slide the door along the rail and that have... 5/5 bantcher - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works like a charm, but what a lot of work it is.......

First, I wanted to offer compliments to other reviewers that described the symptoms of the gears being bad - the "snow", the stop-and-starts, the stop working altogether but can still hear the motor running - nailed it exactly. Very clear to me after reading those that this was exactly the product I needed. It is exactly what it says it is - an OEM Liftmaster gear replacement assembly. The directions that come with it are excellent - step-by-step, and it explains exactly what you need to do. The directions are the best part of this product - if they were not so well done, it would be impossible. No knock against the product, but installation was considerably more work than I expected. I had visions of undoing a couple of screws, popping out a gear, putting in the new ones, and being done - boy, I couldn't have been more wrong. The process can best be summarized as "take your garage door opener completely apart, removing all pieces, wires, etc. Around 30 to 50 screws,... 5/5 Kentucky Reviewer (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worked! Here are a few tips.

This is one of those time consuming jobs with little annoying issues. Here are my tips so hopefully you can avoid the problems I had, making your job much faster than mine was. The sprocket on the top of my unit broke so I just had to replace the drive gear and shaft. No other parts were worn or damaged so I didn't bother with them. The annoying part is that you unscrew the screws on the shaft plate from the inside of the unit and there isn't alot of room for your hand motion. I used the smallest ratchet in my set. A couple things to be aware of during this step is that you can remove the back panel with the circuit board by unplugging the circuit board. It has a multi-pin plug that is very similar to computer drive plugs. Also, I recommend wearing mechanics gloves b/c the unit is made from stamped metal so there are lots of sharp edges and corners which easily cut up your knucles and scrape fingers. One other problem I had was with my chain. Since the sprocket broke the... 4/5 BTM (Jeffersonville, IN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) My problem is that I ordered three at one time and was charged the full shipping and handling charges for each one individually. They were shipped together in one box as one would expect. So the actual price including the shipping and handling was much higher than what I expected. I feel I was ripped off, although somewhat subtly. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 2, 2012

    REPLACED 17-YR OLD LIFTMASTER DOOR-OPENER

We've had a Liftmaster garage door opener that has worked well since the house was built 17 years ago. However, this year, a major (nylon) gear went on the drive shaft, and I had to have a repairman fix it for $100+ in parts and labor. Therefore, I decided to replace the entire drive unit BEFORE it had to be done in an emergency situation, for a whole fistful of dollars. For those who don't know, "Liftmaster" and "Chamberlain" are the same company. "Liftmaster" is the brand for pro-products (through professional installers), and "Chamberlain" is the name of the company, as well as the brand name for DIY products for you and me. BUT they are the same company, same product. One thing off the top: IF your garage door is more than 7 feet tall, you need to order an extension for the belt shaft (that goes between the motor and the door). Do this before you begin, or you'll be stymied until you get the extra part, WHICH DOES NOT come in the box... 5/5 Timothy James Dean "Author and Reader" (Planet Earth) - See all my reviews, October 21, 2013

Quieter, more opening/closing options, but some compatibility issues

I replaced an existing, old Chamberlain model, so I was able to reuse the brackets, which made installing it a little easier, but even then, it is not a minor project to install. Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it right. You need to have a good mechanical sense and be very, very patient installing this. The instructions could also be clearer, with better illustrations. Otherwise, it is better done by a professional, which, of course, adds a lot to the cost.Other than that, though, this model does represent a significant upgrade from my 20 year old Chamberlain.Pros:1) It is noticeably quieter. It uses a long rubber ribbon to pull the "trolley" back and forth. My previous opener used a metal screw drive, which tended to squeak and squeal. Now, all you hear is the wooden door being jostled around as it is pulled up and down. This sound was always there but drownded out by the other noises made by the old opener2) More features and options to... 4/5 Bill Nicholas - See all my reviews This review is from: Chamberlain WD832KEV Ultra Quiet and Strong 1/2 HP Belt Drive Garage Door Opener (Tools & Home Improvement) Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) Quiet, Strong, but Odd Instructions/Missing Parts

I've been with a manual garage for over a decade, so I was anxious to put the Chamberlain WD832KEV Ultra Quiet and Strong 1/2 HP Belt Drive Garage Door Opener on my house so my life would be easier.Installation was a bit tedious, but not horribly difficult. It would have been much easier if the instructions actually fit the device shipped and/or the parts that were included fit what the instructions say. It's either one or the other, either I was shipped a unit that was missing the correct parts or the instructions are not correct for this unit. (The part in question is the belt tensioner, which from what we can tell is either not necessary or not part of this unit. There are other reviews here and elsewhere that speak to this issue.)Either way, we figured out a work-around and got the thing to work correctly. It is very quiet and does the job, the lights are nice. 0 5/5 Da Da Gary (Hewitt, TX United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Liftmaster 971LM 390Mhz Garage Door Remote (Misc.) To verify this remote works with your unit, press the learn button on your overhead unit (remove the plastic light cover on the back side and look for a square button - mine is red). When you press the button the led light will light up. If yours is yellow, then this remote will work for you. I would suggest you immediately unplug and re-plug in your garage door opener to cancel the "learn" mode so that on the off chance that a neighbor is opening their garage door your door opener won't "learn" their code and start opening when they push their remote... but anyway...Setup is as simple as that, press the learn button, then press the remote button. The unit will click and flash to let you know it is learned. Now the remote will work. The remote also comes with battery and clip to mount to your car visor. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 17, 2010

0 5/5 T.Cash "T.Cash" (Boca Raton, FL USA) - See all my reviews Assembly for this item consists of attaching the visor clip, if desired (two seconds). To sync it to your existing garage door opener system you push the purple button on the motor unit, push the button on the remote and hear two clicks (four seconds, more if you have to get something to stand on). That's it. The product "learns" the rolling codes automatically. After that, when you push the button on the remote, your garage door goes up or down until the battery runs out, which have lasted over six years for me now. With this kit and a little time, you can repair your garage door opener.

I was faced with the decision to purchase a new garage door opener for about $230 or repair the existing opener from 1992 which lacks some of today's safety features. Since I don't use this garage door often and I don't have children, I opted to save some cash and do the repair myself. I have no previous experience of doing these types of garage door opener repairs, but as a do-it-yourselfer I figured it was worth the attempt. The kit came with detailed instructions which broke the process down into 5 main steps each with multiple individual tasks. The instructions were not exact for my opener, but were close enough to get the point. The steps start with removing the motor with the worm, removing the chain stem with the gear, replacing the worm, replacing the gear, and finally reassembling everything. Once the first two steps were completed I brought the parts inside to work on. I had the most trouble removing the tightly set pin to replace the gear. About two hours... 5/5 L. T. Not for the faint of heart....

This was a lot of work, more than I had anticipated, despite the excellent reviews here, warning of the many nuts, plugs, and pins involved. The directions were so-so. I found that they were written very generically with the intent to apply to variations of the models. The diagrams could have been more clear...for example, I had trouble figuring out where the retainer clip and limit drive gear (2A) was. It's the white thing on the end of the sprocket assembly shaft. My advice is to take your time and move very slowly through the instructions, step by step. There were a few things that delayed me:* The sprocket assembly had to be lifted up through the hole in the chassis, and I only had 2 inches of clearance between the top of the opener and the ceiling of the garage. This meant that the opener had to come down a few inches. I suspended it with rope and bungees since taking it down completely would have meant un-bolting it from the chain axel, and I didn't... 5/5 Spumanti (Mountain View, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817 This was a lot of work, more than I had anticipated, despite the excellent reviews here, warning of the many nuts, plugs, and pins involved. The directions were so-so. Gear kit is fine but just one warning

0 5/5 BK - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LiftMaster 41A2817 Replacement Gear Kit This gear kit is perfectly fine but the one warning I would give is about the drive gear. It was a hassle getting the old worn-out drive gear off the bearing. You may want to see if you can remove your old drive gear first before ordering this kit. If you can, great - this kit will be what you want.....if you think you can install the new gear on your existing bearing as well. If you can't or find it too difficult to spend the time and effort to do so, then you may want to order the 41C4220A Gear & Sprocket Assembly Kit with the drive gear already on a new bearing. As of the time of this writing, the other kit is only $8 or so more. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 6, 2012

    Liftmaster is garbage

0 1/5 Jessie G. Hart (Kansas United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: LiftMaster 3265-267 Premium Series 1/2 HP Chain Drive NO RAIL ASSEMBLY Liftmaster is garbage. I have the liftmaster 3255. It has terrible remote reception (bumper almost has to touch the garage door to work) and the tech support is dubious. To increase remote range they recommended I purchase an extender that will plug into the opener and then run the wire to the front of the garage. Good thing I looked at my opener before trusting customer support and purchasing the part from them online. The antenna that came with the opener goes in a hole in the cover. When you open the cover you discover that the antenna is soldered directly into the circuit board that controls the opener. The icing on the cake is their website return error messages on about ¼ of their pages when you try searching for help. It also does not let you post a review stating you are not logged in – even if you are logged in as your username. If it did not come with the house I would take it back and never buy from this company again. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 26, 2014

    Garage Door Opener Repair Kit

0 5/5 Claude Simpson (New York) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Chamberlain Sears Craftsman Liftmaster 41A2817 Gear Kit The Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit arrived in a timely manner. The plastic gear in my old opener had become excessively worn and did not work any longer. The instructions that came with the Kit are pretty straight forward. I was able to remove the old gear, etc and install the replacement parts in about an hour. The parts included in the kit are a direct replacement and are installed without any modification. My Sears Craftsman Opener now works like new. This kit is well worth the $18 and one hour it took to install. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 24, 2010
