Internet And The Law, Technology, Society, And Compromises

About this book
Using key events to illustrate major issues, "Internet and the Law: Technology, Society, and Compromises" explores such significant legal battles as "A&M Records v. Napster" and "Apple Computer v. Franklin Computer," allowing readers a look into stories of trade secrets, music theft, and industrial espionage. As information technology grows and the Internet's global reach strengthens, it is becoming more difficult to define rules to regulate it. Governments have tried, for various reasons, to restrict Internet content but have not succeeded, in part because the international nature of the Internet makes enforcement difficult. "Internet and the Law" focuses on laws relating to intellectual property and freedom of expression, and presents information in a clear and concise manner, making it easily accessible to students and others researching the intricacies of Internet law.

    LIFTMASTER

With this kit and a little time, you can repair your garage door opener.

I was faced with the decision to purchase a new garage door opener for about $230 or repair the existing opener from 1992 which lacks some of today's safety features. Since I don't use this garage door often and I don't have children, I opted to save some cash and do the repair myself. I have no previous experience of doing these types of garage door opener repairs, but as a do-it-yourselfer I figured it was worth the attempt. The kit came with detailed instructions which broke the process down into 5 main steps each with multiple individual tasks. The instructions were not exact for my opener, but were close enough to get the point. The steps start with removing the motor with the worm, removing the chain stem with the gear, replacing the worm, replacing the gear, and finally reassembling everything. Once the first two steps were completed I brought the parts inside to work on. I had the most trouble removing the tightly set pin to replace the gear. About two hours... 5/5 L. T. Not for the faint of heart....

This was a lot of work, more than I had anticipated, despite the excellent reviews here, warning of the many nuts, plugs, and pins involved. The directions were so-so. I found that they were written very generically with the intent to apply to variations of the models. The diagrams could have been more clear...for example, I had trouble figuring out where the retainer clip and limit drive gear (2A) was. It's the white thing on the end of the sprocket assembly shaft. My advice is to take your time and move very slowly through the instructions, step by step. There were a few things that delayed me:* The sprocket assembly had to be lifted up through the hole in the chassis, and I only had 2 inches of clearance between the top of the opener and the ceiling of the garage. This meant that the opener had to come down a few inches. I suspended it with rope and bungees since taking it down completely would have meant un-bolting it from the chain axel, and I didn't... 5/5 Spumanti (Mountain View, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817 This was a lot of work, more than I had anticipated, despite the excellent reviews here, warning of the many nuts, plugs, and pins involved. The directions were so-so. Great Product; Relatively Easy Installation

I benefited greatly from comments others made about this product and how to install it, and I thought I'd add mine for any who are looking at getting this. My 11-year-old Liftmaster chain drive garage door opener stopped working and had the same worn out sprocket that so many have described, with the white snow shavings, etc. I too feared I'd have to spend $100s getting it fixed, then I found this great product on Amazon. I installed it last night, the whole process, including finding tools and adjusting the chain and door afterward, took me about 2.5 hours, but the actual removal and installation of the part took only about an hour. Garage door works great now, and is quieter than before. For the installation, I did what the reviewer before me did, which means I didn't remove all of the stuff the instructions said to remove. Here's a fairly detailed step-by-step of what I did -- my inner and outer "trolleys" (the things that slide the door along the rail and that have... 5/5 bantcher - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works like a charm, but what a lot of work it is.......

First, I wanted to offer compliments to other reviewers that described the symptoms of the gears being bad - the "snow", the stop-and-starts, the stop working altogether but can still hear the motor running - nailed it exactly. Very clear to me after reading those that this was exactly the product I needed. It is exactly what it says it is - an OEM Liftmaster gear replacement assembly. The directions that come with it are excellent - step-by-step, and it explains exactly what you need to do. The directions are the best part of this product - if they were not so well done, it would be impossible. No knock against the product, but installation was considerably more work than I expected. I had visions of undoing a couple of screws, popping out a gear, putting in the new ones, and being done - boy, I couldn't have been more wrong. The process can best be summarized as "take your garage door opener completely apart, removing all pieces, wires, etc. Around 30 to 50 screws,... 5/5 Kentucky Reviewer (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worked! Here are a few tips.

This is one of those time consuming jobs with little annoying issues. Here are my tips so hopefully you can avoid the problems I had, making your job much faster than mine was. The sprocket on the top of my unit broke so I just had to replace the drive gear and shaft. No other parts were worn or damaged so I didn't bother with them. The annoying part is that you unscrew the screws on the shaft plate from the inside of the unit and there isn't alot of room for your hand motion. I used the smallest ratchet in my set. A couple things to be aware of during this step is that you can remove the back panel with the circuit board by unplugging the circuit board. It has a multi-pin plug that is very similar to computer drive plugs. Also, I recommend wearing mechanics gloves b/c the unit is made from stamped metal so there are lots of sharp edges and corners which easily cut up your knucles and scrape fingers. One other problem I had was with my chain. Since the sprocket broke the... 4/5 BTM (Jeffersonville, IN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Well worth the price

My 9 year old Chamberlain garage door opener stopped working (I could hear the motor running, but the chain was not moving) - took off the cover and found the gear teeth worn off. For $6+ (including shipping), I decided this was worth a try. Placed an order and received the gear promptly a few days later. Installed it, made a few adjustments, and my garage door opener is working again. Saved me the cost of a new garage door opener (around $170 or more, just looking around locally).A few more thoughts:You will also need lithium grease ("white grease") when you install the new gear. This is NOT included with the gear, but you can pick up a tube at your local hardware store for a few bucks if you don't already have some.I debated whether to purchase just this gear, or the "replacement kit" which includes the mating worm gear, lube, and few more parts. Inspection of my opener showed that the mating worm gear was in good shape, so I decided to get this... 5/5 uqbar - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Easy work and don't forget to lube all the gears with lithium grease. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 21, 2013

0 5/5 Bud - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Drive Gear for Sears Crafsman Liftmaster Chamberlain Garage Door Openers 1984-Current I purchased the Drive Gear only. The Gear that I purchased was the same as original. This was an easy fix. The only minor difficulty I had was driving out the roll pin on the shaft. But, not that hard at all. Replace the gear, greased it (lithium grease), put the cover back on and re-installed it. Total time with interruptions - 1.2 hours. We'll see how it holds up, but appears to working as new. Fast Delivery, installed in minutes and works fine. Many thanks. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 25, 2013

Gear kit is fine but just one warning

0 5/5 BK - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LiftMaster 41A2817 Replacement Gear Kit This gear kit is perfectly fine but the one warning I would give is about the drive gear. It was a hassle getting the old worn-out drive gear off the bearing. You may want to see if you can remove your old drive gear first before ordering this kit. If you can, great - this kit will be what you want.....if you think you can install the new gear on your existing bearing as well. If you can't or find it too difficult to spend the time and effort to do so, then you may want to order the 41C4220A Gear & Sprocket Assembly Kit with the drive gear already on a new bearing. As of the time of this writing, the other kit is only $8 or so more. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 6, 2012

0 5/5 wyln - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LiftMaster 41A2817 Replacement Gear Kit I bough the repair kit with the spindle and gears for a previous repair. Given the mean-time-between-failure for the original components of the LiftMasters that I have, the second LiftMaster broke down with identical symptom, just before finishing the previous repair. With the experience from the 1st repair, I went with this gear only kit. Overall the repair went smoothly, and completed much faster.I am very happy with both repair kits. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 20, 2012

    Saved $140 !

I called a local reputable garage repair shop and they wanted to charge $140-$160... And they tried to sell me a new unit for $400 with installation. I'm glad I said no. I read the reviews... Watched a couple of those YouT*be videos... And ordered the part. It arrived quickly in 2 days. It had descent instructions, but honestly I just glanced over them and got the job done in a 1 1/2 hours. ( It took that long because of the screws) Mind you that I have absolutely no experience at this! The 2 difficult parts were: 1-removing the screws to get the old gear/sprocket out. It was very tight to get your fingers and tools in.Use a 5/16 ratchet. 2- putting the screws in the the piece. As another reviewer said (or it was on a video), First , you have to Tap the screws in. I gently used a hammer, then screwed and unscrewed it in to create the threads. Run thru this first before you try to install it in.That was it. This review is from: LiftMaster Gear and Sprocket Kit 41C4220A Chamberlain Craftsman This is a great way of saving money and getting the job done quickly. I am disabled and had my granddaughter do the job for me. That should tell you about the ease of the project. We were done in 40 minutes. Make sure you lock down the traveling arm to the track so you won't have to re-adjust the chain tension or the door travel length. Do it with the door up and after you lock the travel bracket, release the door from the opener and close it. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 26, 2013

Very good product. Fixed the problem

This unit was easy to install and fixed my old craftsman garage door opener model 139.53962SRT.I learned a few tricks in the processThese are some general troubleshooting steps:1.- Check the wiring first. Be sure wires has not been damaged. With ohm meter check for open circuit or short circuit.2.-Disconnect the receiver and sender units. They both connect to the same terminals. Terminals 2 and 3 in my opener. Be sure to label the wires to be able to reconnect them later. Measure the voltage in the terminals. It should be around 6 volts DC. Terminal 2 negative. Terminal 3 positive. If there is no voltage the control card in the opener is defective. This kit will not help in that case.3.- Reconnect the sender unit first. Its LED light should come on. If it does not, the sender is defective. Replace the sender.4.- If the sender LED comes on, connect the receiver unit. The LED light comes on when it detects infrared light. Point the sender... 5/5 J. Alvarez - See all my reviews, September 5, 2009

    Safety Sensors Beam Kit

0 5/5 Schmidt - See all my reviews I bought this safety beam kit as a replacement for the kit in my Sears garage door opener. The order was delivered on time. Although the sensors were different from the original kit, they perfectly fit as a replacement. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. The task is simple and it took me 5 minuts to complete the job, including the time for the removal of the old sensors whose bots were partially rusted. The new sensors worked perfectlly. The kit came with all the needed items: new bolts with wing nuts and the conectors that were need for splicing the new wires with the old ones. More importent, the sensors cost half the price that was charged by Sears online. Therefore I rate it 5 stars. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 10, 2009

Fixed my problem that was due to the sender side

0 5/5 G. Natehk - See all my reviews This review is from: Liftmaster 41A5034 Garage Door Opener Safety Beam Kit (Electronics) When I was pressing the garage opener, the motor was getting stuck and the bulb would blink 10 times - indicating some perceived obstruction on the safety sensor infrared light beam path. My safety sensor sender side yellow light was on - the receiver side green light was not turning on after multiple tries at alignment. Then I read on one of the reviews that you can use the television remote to check if the receiver is working - right on the green light on the receiver came on. After checking all the wires for loose connection, came to the conclusion that the sender side infrared source might have gone weak.Got part number from owner's manual. Checked on amazon and came to this product. We got the kit within two days (after paying for the 2 day shipping). I was able to cut and splice in the new sender unit and the door started working immediately after that. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 12, 2010
